Do I need to be artistic to join the workshop?

Not at all! Our Sheffield music festival workshops are designed for everyone, from total beginners to closet Picassos. Our professional artists will guide you through the basics of can control, lettering, and shading. By the time the headline act hits the stage, you'll have created a piece of street art you can be proud of. It's all about having a go and enjoying the creative process.

Is the spray paint safe to use at a festival?

Safety is our top priority. We provide high-quality respiratory masks, gloves, and protective ponchos to keep your festival gear clean. We use professional-grade spray paint in a well-ventilated outdoor setting. Our artists provide a comprehensive safety briefing before anyone touches a can, ensuring a fun, worry-free environment for all festival-goers to enjoy their 'Steel City' creative session.

How long does a typical session last?

A standard festival workshop session usually lasts between 1.5 to 2 hours. This gives you enough time to learn the techniques and complete a piece without missing too many of your favourite bands. We also offer 'drop-in' style setups for larger Sheffield events where you can contribute to a massive communal mural over several hours at your own pace.

What should I wear to the graffiti workshop?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a tiny bit of paint on—just in case! While we provide protective gear like ponchos and gloves, festivals can be messy. Sturdy shoes are a must since we’ll be standing on grass or pavement. Think practical festival wear; if it's good for the mosh pit, it's good for the mural!

Can I take my artwork home with me?

Absolutely! Depending on the workshop format, you can either take home your own individual canvas or we can arrange for the collective mural to be displayed at the festival or a local Sheffield venue. If you're painting on a dedicated wall space, make sure to snap plenty of photos of your masterpiece before the sun sets on the final day!

Is this activity suitable for children at the festival?

We generally recommend our festival workshops for ages 8 and up to ensure they can handle the spray cans safely. However, we have special water-based pens and smaller projects for the little ones, making it a family-friendly activity. It’s a fantastic way for kids and teens to engage with Sheffield's vibrant urban culture in a safe, supervised environment.

What happens if it rains during the event?

We are used to the British weather! If there's a light drizzle, we usually push on under our sturdy gazebos. In the event of Sheffield's classic heavy rain, we can often relocate to a covered area or wait for a break in the weather. Our artists are flexible and will do everything possible to make sure the creative vibes keep flowing, rain or shine.

Grab your gear: Meet us at the Graffitifun stall where we’ll kit you out with professional masks, gloves, and a protective poncho.
Artist intro: Our pro street artists will give you a quick lowdown on the history of graffiti and the 'Steel City' style.
Master the tech: Learn how to hold the can, control the pressure, and swap nozzles for different line thicknesses.
Sketch your vibe: Use specialized chalk to outline your design on the canvas or communal wall, inspired by the festival music.
Fill it in: Start layering your colours! This is where your piece starts to pop against the Sheffield skyline.
Detailing: Use 'thin' caps to add sharp outlines and high-contrast highlights that make the art stand out.

Helyi kultúra

Sheffield isn't just about steel and indie rock; it's a living gallery. From the iconic murals in the Cultural Industries Quarter to the hidden gems around Kelham Island, street art is woven into the city's DNA. Our workshops celebrate this heritage, drawing inspiration from local legends like Phlegm and the vibrant community of artists that call the Seven Hills home. 🏔️

Fun fact: Did you know Sheffield is home to one of the UK's oldest legal graffiti walls? The city has long embraced urban art as a way to rejuvenate industrial spaces, making it the perfect backdrop for a festival workshop! 🏗️
