Step by step

  1. Intro & inspiration: We start with a high-energy intro about the history of street art and look at some of the amazing murals around Iquique for inspiration.
  2. Sketching the vision: Students grab markers and paper to plan their 'tag' or 'piece', learning how to structure letters and choose a colour palette.
  3. Safety briefing: We suit up! Everyone gets their mask and gloves, and we go over the 'golden rules' of using spray cans safely.
  4. Can control basics: Time to spray! We practice making thin lines, thick fades, and dots to get a feel for how the pressure works.
  5. The outline: The kids move to the wall or canvas to sketch their design in a light colour, getting the scale just right.
  6. Filling & fading: This is the fun part! We teach them how to blend colours and create those classic graffiti gradients.
  7. The power of the outline: We add a sharp black or dark outline to make the design jump off the surface.
  8. Highlights & details: Final touches like 'flashes' and '3D shadows' are added to give the artwork that professional look.
  9. Group photo & cleanup: We celebrate the new crew of artists with a group photo in front of the finished wall before tidying up.

Local culture

Street art in Iquique

Iquique is a city that breathes colour, sandwiched between the towering sand dunes of the Dragon Hill and the sparkling Pacific Ocean. The local street art scene here is legendary, with many murals reflecting the city's rich history as a nitrate hub and its proud indigenous roots. When we run our workshops, we often draw inspiration from the vibrant 'Baile Chino' costumes and the stunning sunsets over Cavancha Beach. 🎨

Fun Fact: Did you know that Iquique is home to "Cerro Dragón", the largest urban sand dune in the world? It provides an incredible backdrop that has inspired countless local street artists to use earthy tones and grand scales in their work! 🏜️

By joining our after-school programme, students don't just learn to paint; they connect with the local Iquiqueño culture and contribute their own voices to the city's evolving urban landscape.
