Step by step

  1. Intro and safety: We start with a quick meet-and-greet and set the ground rules for using the spray cans safely.
  2. The tag creator: Students learn about the history of tagging and practice creating their own unique signature.
  3. Design sketching: Before hitting the wall, we sketch out our ideas on paper to plan the colors and shapes.
  4. Can control basics: Our artists demonstrate different nozzle techniques to create thick lines, thin lines, and fades.
  5. Outline and fill: The fun begins! Participants start filling in their designs on the graffiti wall or canvas.
  6. Shadows and highlights: We teach the tricks of the trade to make the letters "pop" and look 3D.
  7. The final outline: Adding a sharp contrast outline to make the street art look professional and clean.
  8. Group photo and cleanup: We celebrate the hard work with a photoshoot in front of the art and tidy up the space.

Local culture

Street art in Jijiga

Jijiga is a city on the move, known for its vibrant commerce and the iconic Karamara Mountains standing guard in the distance. Bringing street art here is about merging modern urban expression with the deep-rooted cultural pride of the Somali people. From the bustling markets near the Taiwan area to the growing neighborhoods, there’s an energy in the air that’s perfect for the raw, expressive nature of graffiti. We love working in Jijiga because the youth here are full of untapped potential and "Somalinimo" spirit. 🎨

Fun Fact: Did you know Jijiga was one of the first cities in Ethiopia to have a modern urban plan? It’s the perfect grid for finding the best spots for a mural! ✨

While we work across the country in places like Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, there is something special about the creative spark in Jijiga that always results in the most colorful workshop pieces.
