The experience

Why choose a Graffitifun workshop for your secondary school in Basel? It's more than just a painting lesson; it’s an immersive experience that bridges the gap between traditional education and contemporary culture. Here is why schools love working with us:

  • Boosts creative confidence: Graffiti is a great equaliser; students who struggle with a brush often find their voice with a spray can.
  • Promotes teamwork: Large-scale murals require communication and collaboration, teaching students to work together towards a shared vision.
  • Professional mentoring: Our artists provide real-world insights into the creative industries and the history of urban art.
  • Safe and legal: we teach the importance of legal outlets for art, discouraging illegal tagging by providing a constructive alternative.
  • Zero financial risk: With our "pay after the workshop" policy, schools can book with absolute confidence and peace of mind.
  • Stress-free logistics: We handle everything, from setting up the protective plastic to providing all the gear, leaving teachers free to observe or join in!

Step by step

  1. Initial briefing: We start with an introduction to the history of graffiti culture and a vital safety briefing regarding the equipment.
  2. Idea and sketching: Students work in small groups or individually to sketch their concepts on paper, planning their tags or murals.
  3. Can control: Our artists demonstrate different nozzles (caps) and show students how to control pressure and distance for clean lines.
  4. Outline phase: Students transfer their sketches to the wall or canvas, learning how to scale their art from paper to a large format.
  5. Filling and blending: This is where the magic happens! Students learn to fill in their shapes and blend colours for vibrant gradients.
  6. Highlights and 3D effects: We teach the tricks of the trade, adding highlights and "drop shadows" to make the artwork pop off the surface.
  7. The finishing touch: Students add final outlines and "bits" (decorative elements) to polish their masterpiece.
  8. Group photo and cleanup: We celebrate the finished work with a group photo session before tidying up the site and disposing of materials.

Local culture

Street art in Basel

Basel is arguably the cultural heartbeat of Switzerland, famous not just for its world-class museums but for a thriving, legal street art scene that rivals major European capitals. From the iconic murals lining the railway tracks entering the city to the legal 'Hall of Fame' spots, Basel understands that graffiti is a legitimate and powerful art form. Our workshops tap into this local heritage, showing secondary school students that their city is a canvas for positive expression. By engaging with the same spaces used by Basel’s respected street artists, students feel a genuine connection to the local urban landscape, transforming their perception of art from something static in a gallery to something living and breathing on the city walls.
