What should I wear to the street art festival workshop?

Wear clothes you don't mind getting a bit of 'character' on! While we provide high-quality protective suits and gloves, graffiti is an active art form and a stray mist of spray paint is always a possibility. Closed-toe shoes are a must for safety. We’ll provide all the professional-grade masks and gear you need to stay clean and safe while you're busy creating your masterpiece in the Canberra sun.

Do I need to be an artist to join in?

Not at all! Our Canberra workshops are designed for absolute beginners and seasoned scribblers alike. Our pro artists guide you through every step, from holding the can correctly to mastering complex shading techniques. We focus on the fun and the process of creation, so even if you’ve never touched a spray can before, you'll be amazed at the vibrant piece you'll finish with by the end of the session.

Is the spray paint safe to use?

Safety is our top priority. We provide professional-grade FFP3 respiratory masks, gloves, and protective suits for every participant. Our workshops take place in well-ventilated outdoor areas or specially set up festival zones. Our lead artists are also trained in safety protocols to ensure everyone has a blast without any risks. You’re in safe, experienced hands with the Graffitifun crew!

Can kids join the workshop at the festival?

Absolutely! We love the energy that kids and families bring to the festival. We recommend a minimum age of about 8 years old so they can comfortably handle the pressure of the spray cans. It’s a fantastic way for families to bond over a shared creative project. We ensure the environment is supportive and easy-going so the little ones can express themselves safely alongside the adults.

What happens if it rains on the day?

We know Canberra weather can be a bit unpredictable! If the weather looks like it won't play ball, we usually have a backup indoor space or marquee ready to go so the fun doesn't stop. If conditions are truly extreme, we’ll work with you to reschedule or find a solution. Because we have a large team of backup artists, we almost never have to cancel a session due to staffing.

How long does a typical session last?

The standard festival workshop experience usually runs between 1.5 to 3 hours. This gives us enough time to cover the basics, practice some techniques on the 'practice wall,' and then move on to the main event: your final individual or group piece. It’s the perfect amount of time to get into the 'flow state' and really feel like a street artist without it becoming a marathon.

Step by step

Intro & safety briefing: Meet your pro artist and get kitted out in your protective gear and masks. Safety first, legends!
The tag creator: We start by brainstorming your artist name. Use our digital Tag Creator for inspo or let the Canberra air spark an idea.
Master the can: Learn the 'can-control' basics—how to hold the spray can, how far to stand, and how to manage the pressure for different lines.
First lines: Head to the practice wall to get a feel for the paint. Practice straight lines, circles, and those iconic graffiti drips.
Sketching the piece: Lightly outline your main design on your canvas or wall space using a 'sketch' colour.
Fill-ins & fades: Learn how to fill in your shapes and create those smooth colour gradients and fades that make street art pop.
The outline (The 'Powerline'): Define your work with a crisp black outline to make the whole design stand out.
Personal highlights: Add the final 'shines' and details that give your artwork its 3D look and individual personality.
Photo op & wrap up: Stand back and admire your work! We’ll take some epic group photos of your masterpiece before you head off.

Local culture

Canberra isn't just about politics and roundabouts—it’s actually home to a thriving and sophisticated street art scene! From the iconic legal walls in Civic and Braddon to the hidden gems in Woden, the city is a canvas for world-class artists. Our workshops tap into this local 'Bush Capital' vibe, blending the structured planning the city is known for with the wild, expressive freedom of graffiti. We celebrate the unique ACT culture, where urban design meets the great Australian outdoors.

Fun Fact: Did you know Canberra has several "Legal Practice Walls" specifically designated by the government to encourage urban art? It’s one of the most street-art-friendly cities in Australia! 🇦🇺
