Is the graffiti workshop safe for school-aged students?

Safety is our absolute priority. We use low-odour, high-quality spray paints and provide all necessary protective gear, including masks, gloves, and aprons. Our instructors are professional artists who are experienced in managing large school groups, ensuring that every student follows safety protocols while having a blast. We also conduct a comprehensive safety briefing before any cans are touched.

Can we choose a specific theme for the student artwork?

You bet! Our workshops are highly customisable. We can focus on specific themes like 'community', 'sustainability', or 'Aboriginal history', or even work on a large-scale permanent mural for your school grounds. Many Sydney schools use our sessions to complement their Visual Arts curriculum or as a reward day for students. Just let us know your goals, and we’ll tailor the lesson plan to suit.

Where in Sydney do these school workshops take place?

We can host the workshop right at your school in Sydney! All we need is an outdoor area or a well-ventilated space with some wall or fence space (or we can bring our own mobile boards). Alternatively, we can help arrange a session at a local Sydney street art hotspot if you're looking for an excursion-style experience. We're flexible and mobile to make it easy for you.

What is the cost for a large school group?

Our pricing is tiered based on the number of students and the length of the session, generally ranging from A$40 to A$90 per person. This includes all professional materials, artist fees, and protective equipment. Because school budgets vary, we recommend requesting a custom quote so we can provide the best possible value for your specific group size and requirements.

How long does a typical school workshop last?

A standard educational workshop usually runs between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. This allows plenty of time for the history of street art, a technique demo, and then the hands-on creation of the students' own masterpieces. We can adjust the timing to fit within your school periods or a full-day 'immersion' program if that works better for your schedule.

Is there an educational component to the workshop?

Absolutely! While we focus on a fun, hands-on experience, we also teach the history and culture of street art. We explain the difference between 'tagging' and 'urban art', discuss legal vs. illegal art, and show how graffiti has evolved into a globally respected art form. It's a fantastic way to engage students with contemporary art history in a relatable, exciting way.

The experience

Why choose a Graffitifun workshop for your school? This isn't your average art class. We bring an edge that engages even the hardest-to-reach students. Here is why we are Sydney's favourite choice for urban art education:

🔥 Real-world artists: Learn from pros who actually paint the walls of Sydney—bringing authentic street culture to the classroom.
💪 Boosts confidence: Street art is forgiving and bold, helping students overcome 'fear of the blank page'.
✨ Zero stress for teachers: We handle everything from setup to cleanup, including all specialist safety equipment.
🤝 Team building: Collaborative mural projects encourage communication and teamwork like no other activity.
🚀 Curriculum-aligned: Our sessions can be tailored to meet NSW Creative Arts syllabus outcomes for various stages.

Step by step

Intro and street art history: We kick things off with a high-energy look at where graffiti came from, its evolution in Sydney, and the difference between vandalism and public art.
Safety first: Every student gets kitted out with professional masks, gloves, and aprons. We go over the 'can rules' to ensure everyone stays safe and clean.
The tag creator: Before picking up a can, students brainstorm their own 'street name' and practice sketching their designs on paper to understand letter structure.
Technique demo: Our lead artist shows the group how to control the spray, from creating sharp outlines to smooth 'fades' and 'fills'.
First lines: Under guidance, students head to the boards or wall to lay down their first lines, building confidence with the medium.
Collective creation: The group works on a collaborative piece or individual canvases, applying the techniques they've just learned to bring their vision to life.
The finishing touches: We teach 'highlighting' and 'shading' to make the artwork pop and look three-dimensional.
Group gallery: We wrap up with a massive group photo and a 'critique' session where students share the stories behind their creative choices.

Local culture

Sydney has a world-class street art scene, from the iconic murals of Newtown and Enmore to the hidden laneways of Surry Hills. Our workshops tap into this local spirit, giving students a direct connection to the urban culture that surrounds them every day. We don't just teach art; we teach 'Sydney style'.

Fun Fact: Did you know that the famous 'I'm Always Painting' mural in Enmore was part of a project to brighten up the Inner West? Sydney's council-supported mural programs are proof that graffiti is a vital part of our city's design! 🏆
