Step by step

  1. Intro and history: We kick things off with a high-energy intro about the roots of graffiti and how it evolved into the modern street art we see around Wellington today.
  2. Safety briefing: Every student gets geared up with masks, gloves, and overalls while we explain the "golden rules" of spray painting safely and respectfully.
  3. Sketching the vision: Before touching a can, we grab markers and paper to plan out our designs, focusing on letter structure and "wildstyle" basics.
  4. Can control basics: Students head to the wall or canvas to learn "can control"—how to hold the spray can, adjust pressure, and create different line widths.
  5. The 'Fill-in': Once the outlines are set, we teach the technique of filling in shapes evenly and choosing vibrant colour combinations that pop.
  6. Outlining and highlights: This is where the magic happens! We show the kids how to add sharp outlines and "shines" to make their graffiti look 3D.
  7. The Masterpiece: Whether it's a group mural or individual pieces, everyone works together to finish the artwork, adding those final creative flares and tags.
  8. Photos and 'Wrap-up': We finish with a massive group photo in front of the art. It’s a great moment for the kids to see what they’ve achieved together.

Local culture

Street art in Wellington

Wellington is world-renowned for its creative pulse, and the street art scene here is no exception. From the iconic murals in Hannah's Laneway to the hidden gems tucked away in Newtown, our city is a living gallery. Getting your students involved in a graffiti workshop connects them directly to this local culture, turning the whole city into an inspiration graveyard.

Fun Fact: Did you know Wellington has several "legal walls" where artists can hone their craft without breaking the law? It's this supportive atmosphere that makes the Capital the perfect place for young Kiwis to learn the ropes of street art safely and professionally!

Pricing

Our school workshops are affordably priced to ensure every student can get involved in the fun. Prices typically range from NZ$45 to NZ$95 per person, depending on group size, materials (canvases vs. walls), and session length.

We believe in total transparency and zero stress for teachers: No upfront payment is required—you only pay after the workshop is complete and everyone has had a blast!
