Step by step
- The crew meet-up: Arrive at the site and meet your lead artist. We'll start with a brief intro to the local Wellington street art scene and the culture.
- Safety first: Get geared up! We provide your protective suit, gloves, and mask. We’ll teach you how to handle the cans properly.
- Cap control: Learn about different nozzles (caps). You'll practice making thin lines, fat lines, and dots to get a feel for the pressure.
- The tag: Every artist needs a name. You'll practice your 'tag' or signature, focusing on flow and style on a practice surface.
- Sketching the vision: Use chalk or light paint to map out your main design. Our artists will help you with proportions and layout.
- The fill-in: Start adding colour! This is where your piece comes to life as you learn how to blend colours and create smooth gradients.
- Outlining: The magic step. Learn how to use a 'skinny cap' to put a sharp outline around your work, making the design pop.
- Details and highlights: Add the finishing touches—shine, 3D shadows, or 'bits' that give your graffiti that professional Kiwi edge.
- The reveal: Step back, snap some photos of your masterpiece, and celebrate your new skills with the rest of the crew!

Local culture
Street art in Wellington
Wellington isn't just about wind and coffee; it's a living gallery! From the iconic murals in Hannahs Laneway to the hidden gems tucked away in the CBD's narrow alleys, street art is woven into the city's DNA. Our Wellington graffiti workshops take inspiration from the eclectic, bohemian vibe of Cuba Street and the bold, cultural storytelling found throughout the Te Ngākau Civic Square. We celebrate the unique blend of Pacific influence and modern urban grit that makes the Wellington scene so special.
Fun Fact: Did you know Wellington is home to some of the most impressive large-scale murals in New Zealand, commissioned specifically to brighten up earthquake-strengthened buildings? It’s art with a purpose!
