Step by step

  1. Initial kōrero: Get in touch with us to discuss your vision, group size, and preferred dates for your Wellington youth project.
  2. Concept design: Our artists work with you to pick a theme—whether it's local culture, teen mental health, or just pure abstract fun.
  3. Safety briefing: On the day, we start with a quick run-through on how to use the gear safely and respect the environment.
  4. Mastering the can: Participants learn the basics of 'can control,' including lines, dots, and how to swap caps for different effects.
  5. Sketching it out: We move from practice boards to the main project, sketching the 'skeleton' of the mural under professional guidance.
  6. Fill-in and colour: This is where the magic happens! The group works together to fill in the piece with vibrant Wellington-inspired colours.
  7. The finishing touches: Our mentors help the youth add highlights, shadows, and clean outlines to make the artwork really pop.
  8. Final reveal: We take photos of the crew and their masterpiece—a perfect moment to celebrate their hard work and creativity!

Local culture

Street art in Wellington

Wellington isn't just the political capital; it’s the creative heart of Aotearoa. From the iconic murals in Hannahs Laneway to the ever-changing street art around Te Karo Park, the city is a living gallery. Our youth projects tap into this local 'Pōneke' energy, drawing inspiration from the rugged coastline and the bustling urban vibe. We encourage our workshop participants to look at the world around them for inspiration—whether that’s the native birds of Zealandia or the street culture of Cuba Street.

Fun Fact: Did you know Wellington has one of the highest densities of street art per capita in New Zealand? It's the perfect backdrop for young people to discover their own creative identity! 🥝
