The experience

Why choose a graffiti workshop for your next youth initiative? It's more than just spray painting—it's about empowerment and creative expression! 🎤

  • 💪 Boosts confidence: Seeing a giant mural come to life from their own hands gives youth a massive sense of achievement.
  • 🤝 Teamwork in action: Giant murals require collaboration, helping kids learn to communicate and work together towards a goal.
  • 🔥 Safe & legal: We provide a legitimate outlet for street art, teaching the difference between vandalism and artistic expression.
  • 🎉 High engagement: Forget boring lectures; this is hands-on, loud, and colourful—exactly what keeps teenagers interested!
  • 🌟 Expert Mentors: Our artists aren't just teachers; they're mentors who share their stories and passion for the craft.

Step by step

  1. Intro & inspiration: We start with a quick yarn about graffiti culture and show some epic local examples to get the creative juices flowing.
  2. Safety first: Everyone gets geared up in masks and suits while we explain the 'golden rules' of using spray cans safely.
  3. The first spray: Participants grab a can and learn 'can control'—practising dots, lines, and different pressure techniques on a practice wall.
  4. Sketching the vision: The group works together or individually to sketch out their design ideas on paper before hitting the big boards.
  5. Outline & fill: Our pro artists guide the youth through outlining their letters and filling them with vibrant, popping colours.
  6. Cutting & detailing: This is where the magic happens! We teach how to 'cut' edges to make lines sharp and add highlights for that 3D look.
  7. The final flourish: Participants add their personal 'tag' or signature to their work, claim their masterpiece, and take some 'gram-worthy photos.
  8. Tidying the 'yard': We pack up all the gear and ensure the site is left spotless, leaving only the awesome art (and memories) behind.

Local culture

Street art in Palmerston North

Palmerston North has always had a sneaky-cool relationship with street art. From the hidden gems down Berrymans Lane to the massive murals that brighten up the city centre, Palmy understands that urban art is the heartbeat of a modern city. Our workshops tap into this local vibe, encouraging youth to look at their city as a canvas for positive change rather than just concrete and glass. We often draw inspiration from the diverse cultures that make the Manawatu unique, blending modern graffiti styles with local identity. ✨

Fun Fact: Did you know Palmerston North is home to one of NZ's most vibrant street art festivals? The city's 'Street Prints' legacy means there's inspiration around every corner for our workshop participants! 🏆
