Is it safe for primary school children to use spray cans?

Absolutely! Safety is our top priority for every workshop in Palmerston North. We use professional-grade, low-odour water-based spray paints where possible for younger students, and we provide all necessary protective gear, including gloves, masks, and aprons. Our artists are experienced in managing large groups of energetic kids, ensuring they follow instructions while having a blast in a controlled environment. Everyone leaves with clean clothes and a big smile!

Where do the workshops take place in Palmerston North?

We are incredibly flexible! Whether you want the session held on your school courts in Papaioea, a local community hall, or even right in the classroom using our indoor-safe techniques, we can make it happen. We bring all the drop-cloths and protective coverings needed to ensure the site stays exactly as we found it—apart from the beautiful new art your students create, of course!

How long does a typical school session last?

Usually, we find that 1.5 to 2 hours is the sweet spot for primary school students. It’s long enough for them to learn the techniques and complete a masterpiece, but short enough to keep their focus sharp and energy levels high. We can adjust the timing to fit in with your school's bell schedule or specific period lengths.

Do the teachers need to provide any materials?

Not a thing! Graffitifun provides everything required for a successful creative day. This includes the spray cans, caps, safety gear, and the 'canvases' (which could be individual boards or a large shared mural wall). We even bring our own inspiration books to help the kids brainstorm. Just make sure the kids are wearing comfortable clothes they don't mind getting a tiny bit of dust on!

How does this workshop fit into the New Zealand School Curriculum?

Graffiti workshops are surprisingly educational. They align perfectly with the New Zealand Arts Curriculum, focusing on developing practical knowledge, investigating the visual arts in context, and communicating ideas. Beyond the art itself, it’s a brilliant exercise in teamwork, patience, and following multi-step instructions. Students learn about the history of street art and the difference between purposeful public art and illegal tagging.

Can the students choose what they want to paint?

That is actually our specialty! Part of the workshop involves a brainstorming session where students learn how to take a simple word or idea and turn it into a stylized 'piece.' Our artists guide them through letter structure, 3D effects, and highlighting. It’s amazing to see how quickly Palmerston North kids pick up these skills and start supporting one another's creative journeys.

The experience

Teaching street art in a primary school setting isn't just about paint—it's about building confidence and seeing the world through a different lens. Here is why Palmerston North schools love working with us:

🔥 Confidence Boost: There are no mistakes in graffiti! We help every child find their style and feel proud of what they create.
🎨 Professional Mentors: Our artists aren't just 'cool'—they are experienced educators who know how to keep a class engaged and inspired.
🧠 Curriculum-Linked: We can easily tie our sessions into Art, Social Studies, or even local history units.
🚀 Zero Stress for Teachers: We bring everything, set everything up, and clean everything up. You just get to enjoy the "cool teacher" status!
🏆 Team Building: Collaborative murals require students to communicate and work together to achieve a massive, colourful goal.

Step by step

Initial kōrero: You reach out to us with your school's vision and group size. We'll chat about the best date and location in Palmy for your session.
Concept design: Our artists prepare a lesson plan tailored to your students' age group. We can even link it to a specific theme you're studying in class!
Safety briefing: On the day, we start with a fun, interactive safety talk. The kids learn how to handle the equipment responsibly and respect the workspace.
Mastering the can: Before hitting the final project, students practice 'can control'—learning how to make dots, lines, and fades like a pro.
Lettering & style: We dive into the world of graffiti fonts. Students sketch out their names or a team word, learning about balance and flow.
The Big Day paint: The caps go on and the colour flies! Students work on their individual boards or a collaborative mural under the guidance of our pros.
Final touches: We show the kids how to add those 'pro' details—outlines, highlights, and stars—to make their artwork really pop.
Clean up & showcase: We handle the tidy-up while the kids admire their work. It's the perfect time for a class photo with the finished pieces!

Good to know

Duration: Standard sessions run for 90 to 120 minutes, perfectly timed for school periods.

Local culture

Palmerston North has a sneaky-good street art scene that most people miss if they aren't looking! From the incredible murals hidden in the George Street alleyways to the large-scale works commissioned for the 'Palmy Proper' revitalisation, the city is a canvas waiting to be explored. We love bringing our workshops to the Manawatū region because the local students have such a fresh, grounded perspective.

Fun Fact: Did you know Palmerston North was once the site of a massive international stencil art festival? The creative spirit is definitely in the groundwater here!

Our workshops tap into this local heritage, showing students that art isn't just something found in a dusty gallery—it's part of the fabric of their own city. We encourage Palmy kids to draw inspiration from the landscapes around the Manawatū River and the modern energy of their hometown. ✨
