Do I need to be an artist to join a graffiti workshop in Palmerston North?

You don't need any previous art experience to join us in Palmy! Our workshops are designed for absolute beginners as well as those with a bit of a creative streak. Our local artists will guide you through everything from how to hold the can to creating complex shapes. It’s all about having a go, getting your hands dirty, and enjoying the process of making something uniquely yours.

Is it safe to use spray paint, and do you provide gear?

Safety is our number one priority. We provide all participants with high-quality FFP3 respirators to ensure you aren't breathing in any fumes. We also provide gloves and protective suits to keep your clothes clean. Our instructors are professional artists who will give you a full safety briefing before we start, ensuring everyone has a blast while staying completely safe.

How long does a typical workshop session last?

A standard public art workshop usually runs for about 2 to 2.5 hours. This gives us enough time to cover the basics, practice some techniques on the wall, and then collaborate on a final masterpiece. If you're looking for something more intensive for a festival or a larger group, we can definitely scale the timeframe to suit your schedule.

What is the minimum age for participants?

We reckon graffiti is for everyone! Our standard workshops are perfect for anyone aged 6 and up. For the younger kids, we focus more on simple shapes and bright colours, while the older teens and adults can dive into more technical "wildstyle" lettering and shading. It’s a fantastic way for different generations in the Manawatu to connect over a shared project.

Where in Palmerston North do the workshops take place?

Standard workshops usually happen at our designated street art zones in Palmerston North. However, if you have a specific private location or a local event space with proper ventilation or outdoor access, we can often bring the workshop to you! Just let us know your location preferences when you request a quote, and we'll see if we can make it work.

How does the payment process work? Do I pay upfront?

Graffitifun is all about stress-free planning. You don't need to pay anything upfront when you book your session. We believe in the quality of our workshops so much that you only pay after the experience is finished. This way, you can book with total confidence knowing that we are committed to delivering an awesome, high-energy creative session for your group.

Step by step

Intro and safety briefing: We kick things off with a warm Kiwi welcome and a quick rundown on how to use the gear safely, including mask fitting.
Mastering the can: You'll learn the 'anatomy' of a spray can, including how different caps (nozzles) change the width and texture of your lines.
Basic techniques: Practice making dots, thin lines, and fat fills. It’s all about muscle memory and finding your flow on the wall.
Sketching your concept: Our artists help you draft a design on paper or directly on the surface, focusing on layout and scale.
Outline and fill: This is where the magic happens! You'll start blocking in your colours and creating the foundation of your piece.
The puff and the shine: Learn how to add highlights, shadows, and 3D effects to make your graffiti literally pop off the wall.
The final outline: Put on those crisp final 'power lines' to sharpen the image and give it that professional street art finish.
Group photo and wrap-up: We celebrate the finished masterpiece with a group shot—perfect for sharing your new skills with the world!

Creative collaboration during a graffiti company outing

Local culture

Palmerston North might be known as the "Student City," but its heart beats with a surprisingly edgy urban art scene. From the hidden gems in the Berrymans Lane area to the large-scale murals that brighten up the CBD, Palmy has embraced street art as a way to tell its unique stories. The local scene is a mix of agricultural heritage and youthful, university-driven energy, which creates a fantastic backdrop for our workshops.

Fun fact: Palmerston North is home to several internationally recognised murals commissioned during major street art festivals, making the city a literal open-air gallery!

When you join us for a session, you're not just spraying paint; you're becoming part of the Manawatu’s growing creative legacy. We love tapping into the local "can-do" attitude that defines this region. After you've finished your piece, you can head over to George Street for a coffee or a craft brew and brag about your new skills!

Pricing

Because every street art project in Palmerston North is unique—whether it's a small birthday bash or a massive brand activation—we don't do "one size fits all" pricing. Prices depend on your group size, the location, and the type of setup you're after. The best part? No upfront payment is required! You only pay once the workshop is done and everyone is stoked with the result.
