Is the paint safe for participants with sensory sensitivities?

Absolutely! We use high-quality, water-based spray cans that are low-odour and non-toxic for our indoor or sensitive-group sessions. We also provide full protective gear, including masks and gloves, to ensure everyone stays clean and comfortable throughout the creative process. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities while we dive into the world of street art.

Are your workshop locations in Edmonton wheelchair accessible?

Yes, we take accessibility seriously. We choose locations in Edmonton that offer flat ground and wide spaces to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids. Our artists are also trained to adapt their teaching styles, ensuring that every participant, regardless of their physical mobility, can actively engage with the spray cans and contribute to the masterpiece.

How long does a typical workshop last?

We recommend a session length of about 90 minutes to 2 hours for our special needs programs. This allows plenty of time for an introduction, creative exploration, and the actual painting without it becoming overwhelming. However, we are completely flexible! If your group needs more frequent breaks or a shorter, high-energy session, we can easily adjust the schedule to fit your needs.

How do you adapt the workshop for different ability levels?

Inclusion is at the heart of what we do. Our professional artists are experienced in working with diverse needs, including neurodivergence and physical disabilities. We use visual aids, hands-on demonstrations, and a very patient, encouraging approach. We focus on what each person *can* do, celebrating every drip and line as a unique piece of artistic expression.

Do participants need any prior art experience?

Not at all! This workshop is designed for absolute beginners. We start with the very basics—how to hold the can, how to control the pressure, and how to make simple shapes. Our goal isn't to create 'perfect' art, but to enjoy the process of creation. By the end of the day, everyone is always amazed at what they managed to build together.

What should participants wear to the workshop?

We suggest wearing comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a little 'artistic' (read: paint-splattered). While we provide protective overalls and gloves, graffiti is a messy business! Closed-toe shoes are also a must for safety. Think of it as your 'artist's uniform' for the day—the more paint you leave with, the more fun you probably had!

Step by step

Consultation & Planning: We start by chatting with you to understand the specific needs and interests of your group to tailor the experience perfectly.
Safe Space Setup: Our team arrives early at the Edmonton venue to set up plastic coverings, canvases, and organized workstations.
Gear Up: Every participant is fitted with protective overalls, gloves, and masks to ensure a clean and safe environment.
Artist Introduction: Our friendly local artists introduce themselves and demonstrate the basic rhythm of spray painting.
Practice Rounds: Participants get to 'feel' the cans, practicing spray pressure and basic lines on a test surface.
The Creative Flow: We move on to the main artwork, where everyone contributes their own colours and shapes to the collective piece.
Detailing & Fun: We add final touches, tags, and highlights to make the colours pop and the artwork truly shine.
The Big Reveal: We take a moment to celebrate the finished masterpiece and snap some group photos with the art.
Clean Up: We handle all the cleanup and packing, leaving the space exactly as we found it—except for the amazing memories!

Local culture

Edmonton has a soul built on community and artistic expression. From the vibrant murals in Old Strathcona to the rotating galleries of the Free Wall, our city embraces the raw energy of street art. We bring that same 'Edmonton Proud' spirit to our special needs programs, ensuring that everyone in our community has a chance to contribute to the city's colourful identity. We love working in local spaces that mirror the city's welcoming vibe, making art accessible to all neighbours across the North Saskatchewan River.

Fun Fact: Did you know Edmonton is home to some of the largest legal graffiti walls in Western Canada? This "open gallery" culture is exactly why the City of Champions is the perfect place to pick up a spray can for the first time! 🎨
