Is the spray paint safe for elementary school children?

Safety is our #1 priority. We use low-odor, non-toxic spray paint specifically designed for creative projects. Every student is provided with protective gloves, masks, and aprons to keep their clothes and lungs clean. Our professional artists are experienced in managing large groups of energetic kids and provide constant supervision to ensure the spray cans are used responsibly and safely throughout the entire session.

Do the kids need to have any prior drawing or art skills?

Absolutely! Our workshops are designed for kids of all skill levels, even those who have never held a crayon. We focus on 'expression over perfection.' Our instructors break down complex shapes into simple steps that any 6 to 12-year-old can follow. By the end of the session, every student will have created something they are genuinely proud of, boosting their creative confidence.

What should the students wear on the day of the workshop?

While we provide protective aprons, we always recommend that students wear 'play clothes' or older outfits on workshop day. Spray paint is permanent on fabric, and even with our best gear, a little bit of 'artistic splash' can happen when kids are having this much fun. Comfortable footwear is also a must as we'll be standing and moving around for most of the session.

Can the workshop take place right on our school grounds?

We are totally flexible! We can bring the workshop directly to your school playground or parking lot using our mobile graffiti walls. Alternatively, if you're looking for a field trip vibe, we can host your group at one of Edmonton's cool legal street art locations. We provide all the boards, paint, and safety equipment, so your school doesn't have to provide anything but the space!

Can we create a permanent mural for our school building?

Yes, we love making lasting impacts! We offer two main options: a temporary session where kids paint individual boards to take home, or a collaborative mural project where the students work together to create a permanent piece of art for a school hallway or gym. Collaborative murals are a fantastic way to build school spirit and leave a legacy for future graduating classes.

How long does a typical school workshop session last?

A typical primary school session lasts between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. This includes the safety briefing, the history of street art, practice sessions, and the final creation phase. We can easily adjust the timing to fit into your school’s double-period schedule or a special designated arts day. We work around your bell schedule to make things as seamless as possible for teachers.

What happens if it rains on our scheduled workshop day?

Edmonton weather can be unpredictable, but we’ve got you covered! If the forecast looks like rain or heavy wind, we can move the workshop indoors to a well-ventilated gym or cafeteria using specialized low-pressure cans. Alternatively, we can reschedule to a better day. Since we have backup artists available, we are very flexible when it comes to last-minute adjustments due to the Alberta weather.

The experience

Why choose a graffiti workshop for your primary school? It’s more than just painting—it’s about confidence, collaboration, and thinking outside the box! Here’s why Edmonton schools love working with us:

Boosts Creative Confidence: We show kids that there are no mistakes in art, only "happy accidents," helping even the shyest students shine. 🌟
Engages Every Learner: Street art is tactile and high-energy, making it perfect for kids who find traditional classroom settings a bit too quiet.
Promotes Teamwork: Our collaborative mural sessions require students to communicate and work together to create one giant, cohesive piece of art. 🤝
Cultural Connection: We help students understand the positive impact of public art in their local Edmonton community.
Professional Guidance: Our artists aren't just great painters—they are mentors who love inspiring the next generation of creatives. 🏆
Zero Stress for Teachers: We handle the setup, the instruction, the materials, and (most importantly) the cleanup!

Step by step

Intro & Inspiration: We kick things off with a high-energy talk about the history of street art and how it turned from doodles into world-class gallery art.
Safety First: Every student gets geared up with masks, gloves, and aprons. We demonstrate the right way to hold and trigger a spray can safely.
The Art of the Tag: Before hitting the big walls, kids learn to design their own 'tag' or nickname using our interactive Tag Creator concepts.
First Lines: Under the guidance of our pros, students practice basic spraying techniques—making dots, lines, and fades on practice boards.
Color Theory: We teach the kids how to pick colors that pop and how to layer shades to create 3D effects that really stand out.
The Main Event: Students start working on their final masterpiece, whether it’s an individual canvas or a section of a massive collaborative school mural.
Finishing Touches: Our artists help the kids add sharp outlines and 'highlights' to make their artwork look like a professional piece of street art.
Group Gallery: We finish with a 'grand reveal' where the kids present their work to their classmates, followed by a fun group photo session!

Local culture

Edmonton has a rich and growing street art scene that serves as the perfect backdrop for our workshops. From the incredible murals in Old Strathcona to the legal graffiti walls at the free-to-use sites around the city, 'YEG' is a place that celebrates urban creativity. We often draw inspiration from local landmarks like the High Level Bridge or the Muttart Conservatory when brainstorming designs with the kids.

Fun Fact: Did you know Edmonton is home to some of the largest legal mural projects in Western Canada? The city actively supports artists in turning grey concrete into colourful stories, making it a world-class outdoor gallery!

Our workshops connect students to this local culture, teaching them the difference between vandalism and the beautiful public art they see while driving through downtown or visiting the ICE District. We love helping Edmonton's younger generation feel like they are part of the city's artistic heartbeat.
