Step by step

  1. The introduction: Our pro graffiti artists meet the class and share some cool stories about the history of street art in Calgary.
  2. Safety first: We suit everyone up in protective gear and go over the ground rules for using spray cans safely and respectfully.
  3. Sketching the vision: Students grab markers and paper to brainstorm their designs, focus on their 'tag' or a class theme.
  4. Technique demo: We show the kids how to hold the can, control the pressure, and create different lines and fades.
  5. First layers: The kids head to the boards to start filling in their background colors and large shapes.
  6. Outline and detail: This is where the magic happens! We help the students add sharp outlines and ‘pizzazz’ to their work.
  7. The finishing touches: We add highlights and shadows to make the graffiti pop off the wall.
  8. Gallery walk: The class does a walk-through to celebrate everyone's hard work and take some epic group photos!

Local culture

Street art in Calgary

Calgary's street art scene has absolutely exploded in recent years, thanks in part to initiatives like the BUMP (Beltline Urban Murals Project) Festival. The city is now a massive outdoor gallery! During our workshops, we love to reference local landmarks and the incredible murals found throughout the Beltline and Downtown areas. It helps the kids feel connected to the urban landscape of their own city.

Fun Fact: Did you know Calgary is home to some of the largest murals in Canada? Some of the artwork in the Beltline is over 10 stories tall! We use these local examples to show students how art can transform a neighborhood. 🖌️
