Is spray painting safe for primary school children?

Safety is our absolute #1 priority! We provide high-quality protective gear, including professional-grade masks, gloves, and overalls. We also use low-odor spray paint whenever possible and always conduct workshops in well-ventilated outdoor areas. Our instructors are experienced in working with primary-aged children and maintain a structured, supervised environment to ensure every student stays safe while they express their creativity.

How long does a typical school workshop last?

Typically, our primary school workshops in Ottawa last between 1.5 to 2 hours. This timeframe is the 'sweet spot' for younger students—it's long enough for them to learn the techniques and complete a masterpiece, but short enough to keep their energy levels high and their focus sharp. We can also adjust the timing to fit into your specific school bell schedule or lunch breaks.

What materials do we need to provide?

We bring everything! Graffitifun provides the specialized spray cans, safety gear (masks, gloves, suits), and the surfaces to paint on. We can set up mobile wooden panels, large canvases, or even cellophane 'walls' between trees if a permanent wall isn't available. All your school needs to provides is an outdoor space and a group of excited students ready to get their hands a little colorful!

Do the students need any prior art experience?

Not at all! Our workshops are designed for absolute beginners. Our professional Ottawa artists start with the basics, teaching kids how to hold the can and control the spray. We focus on building confidence and showing students that art is about expression, not just technical perfection. You’ll be amazed at what these kids can create with just a little bit of expert guidance and encouragement.

What happens if it rains on the day of the workshop?

We are experts at pivoting! If the Ottawa weather doesn't cooperate, we have several options. We can reschedule the session at no extra cost, or we can move the workshop indoors if your school has a very well-ventilated space (like a large open garage or workshop area) using specialized water-based paint markers and sketching techniques. With our backup artist system, we ensure your event happens one way or another.

Do we have to pay in advance?

We believe in flexibility for educators. You don't need to pay anything upfront to secure your date. We want you to feel completely confident in your booking. Once the workshop is completed and you're 100% satisfied with the experience we've delivered to your students, we will handle the payment. It’s all about making the process as stress-free and fun as possible for the school staff.

The experience

Why choose a graffiti workshop for your Ottawa primary school? It’s more than just painting walls; it’s about building a sense of belonging and bravery in every student. Here’s why it’s a total game-changer:

Confidence boost: Nothing beats the "I made that!" feeling when a student sees their giant, colorful artwork come to life. 🚀
Zero barrier to entry: You don't need to be a "good drawer" to be a great graffiti artist. It levels the playing field for all students. ✨
Teamwork in action: Many of our school projects involve "collaborative murals" where kids have to plan and work together to create something huge.
Authentic urban culture: Give your students a real connection to the modern art world through the eyes of real professional artists. 🎤
Stress-free for teachers: We handle the setup, the cleanup, and the safety. You just get to watch your students shine!
No risk booking: With no upfront payment and our 100% satisfaction focus, it’s a totally worry-free experience for your administration.

Step by step

Intro and safety briefing: Our pro artists greet the class and get everyone geared up in protective suits and masks while explaining the ground rules for a safe, fun session.
The history of street art: We give a kid-friendly breakdown of how graffiti started and how it evolved into the vibrant street art we see in neighborhoods like the Glebe today.
First lines and nozzle control: Students grab their first cans and learn the "feel" of the spray, practicing dots, thin lines, and thick flares on a practice surface.
Sketching the vision: Using paper or practice boards, the kids brainstorm their designs, focusing on bold letters or fun characters that represent their personality.
Filling and fading: This is where the magic happens! We teach the kids how to fill in their shapes and create cool "fades" by blending different colors together seamlessly.
The final outline: Our artists help the students add that "pop" by adding a sharp black or white outline around their work, making their graffiti truly stand out.
Group masterpiece reveal: We step back as a class to admire the collective work, take plenty of photos, and celebrate the incredible new skills the students have mastered.

Everything included: We provide premium spray paint, protective overalls, gloves, professional masks, and the painting surfaces.

Local culture

Ottawa might be known for Parliament Hill, but its soul lives in the colorful murals of the ByWard Market and the Tech Wall on Slater Street. We love tapping into that local creative energy! Our workshops celebrate the unique spirit of the capital, teaching kids that art isn't just something you find in a museum—it’s something you can create right in your own community. 🇨🇦

Fun fact: Ottawa is home to several "legal graffiti walls" where artists are encouraged to paint freely. We love telling students that their city actually values and protects this form of legal public expression!

Pricing

Our workshop pricing is designed to be affordable for Ottawa schools, with rates typically ranging from C$40 to C$90 per student. This covers every single thing—from the professional artist’s time to the very last drop of paint in the can. 💸

Because every school has different needs (and group sizes!), we don't believe in one-size-fits-all pricing. Whether you're doing a small workshop for an art club or a massive event for the whole school, we'll build a package that works for your budget.
