How it works

  1. Initial briefing: Meet your pro artist and get kitted out with gloves, masks, and ponchos.
  2. The basics: Learn how to hold the can, swap nozzles (caps), and control the pressure for different effects.
  3. Line work: Practice drawing straight lines, circles, and 'fades' on our practice walls.
  4. Concept design: Sketch out your idea or choose from one of our 'cool-as' templates to plan your piece.
  5. Filling in: Master the art of 'filling' and 'cutting in' to make your colours pop and stay within the lines.
  6. Outlining: The magic moment where your art comes to life with sharp outlines and highlights.
  7. Final touches: Add 'dob-ons,' drips, or glows to give your work that professional street art edge.
  8. Photo op: Strike a pose with your finished masterpiece for the 'Gram before the paint dries.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to have any artistic experience to join?

Absolutely! Our Christchurch pop-up events are designed specifically for beginners. Most of our participants have never touched a spray can before. Our professional street artists will guide you through every step, from basic nozzle control and line work to advanced shading techniques. We provide a safe, supportive environment where you can experiment, make mistakes, and eventually walk away with a piece of art you're genuinely proud of. It's all about having a go!

Is it safe and what should I wear?

Safety is our top priority. We provide high-quality respiratory masks, disposable gloves, and protective ponchos to keep your clothes clean. We use low-odour, professional-grade spray paint. Our artists provide a comprehensive safety briefing before anyone touches a can. We recommend wearing comfortable 'outdoor' clothes and closed-toe shoes that you don't mind getting a tiny bit of dust on, just in case you get too excited with the spray!

How long does the pop-up workshop last?

The total experience usually runs between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. This includes the initial safety briefing, a demonstration of techniques by our pro artists, dedicated practice time on our mobile walls, and the final 'masterpiece' phase where you create your main work. We find this is the perfect 'sweet spot' to learn the skills and get creative without feeling rushed or getting too tired. It’s a high-energy session from start to finish!

What happens if it rains on the day?

We love New Zealand's 'four seasons in one day' weather! For our Christchurch pop-up events, we always have a Plan B. If we are outdoors and the rain sets in, we typically move to a covered area or use professional gazebos to keep the artists and the art dry. If the weather is truly 'feral,' we will coordinate with you to reschedule or move to one of our indoor partner venues so the fun doesn't stop.

What is the minimum and maximum group size?

Our pop-up events are super flexible. We can host small groups of 10 people for intimate gatherings, or scale up to large-scale public activations for hundreds of participants throughout the day. For private bookings, we recommend a minimum of 10 people to get the best atmosphere. If you have a massive crew, we simply bring in more of our backup artists and extra mobile walls to ensure everyone gets plenty of 'can-time.'

Can I take my artwork home with me?

Yes! Depending on the specific pop-up format, you will either be working on a high-quality shared mural or individual canvases. For most of our Christchurch private pop-ups, participants create their own piece on a canvas or board that can be taken home once the paint is dry. It’s the ultimate souvenir of your creative journey in the Garden City. We’ll even give you tips on how to display it!

Do I need to pay in advance to book?

One of the best things about Graffitifun is our 'no stress' booking policy. You don't need to pay anything upfront to secure your date. We believe in our service so much that you only pay after the workshop is complete. This gives you total peace of mind and flexibility, especially when organizing larger groups or corporate events where internal approvals might take a bit of time. We're all about making it easy!
