Do I need any previous art experience to join?

Absolutely! Most of our Hamilton pop-up participants have never touched a spray can before. Our professional artists start with the absolute basics—how to hold the can, finger pressure, and safety. We guide you through every step until you're confident enough to flex your creative muscles on the canvas. It's all about having a go and enjoying the process.

What should I wear to the pop-up workshop?

We use high-quality spray paint which can be permanent, so we provide everyone with protective ponchos and gloves. That said, it’s best to wear 'project clothes' and comfortable sneakers that you don't mind getting a little dusty or speckled. Avoid your Sunday best or expensive designer gear just in case—graffiti is a messy, beautiful business!

Is the paint safe and what safety gear is provided?

Safety is our top priority. We use low-odour, high-quality paints and host our events in well-ventilated areas or outdoors. We provide all necessary protective gear including gloves and masks if requested. Our instructors are seasoned pros who supervise the 'spray zone' at all times to ensure everyone stays safe while having a blast.

How much of the workshop is actually spent painting?

This isn't a boring lecture! You'll spend about 15-20 minutes learning the fundamentals and safety, and the rest of the time is pure hands-on creation. You’ll practice lines, fades, and filling before moving onto your main masterpiece. Our artists rotate through the group to offer 1-on-1 tips and tricks throughout the entire session.

What happens if it rains on the day of the event?

Hamilton's weather can be a bit 'four seasons in one day.' For our pop-up events, we usually have a covered backup location or a marquee ready to go. If the weather is truly shocking and we can't safely paint, we'll work with you to reschedule or find an indoor alternative so the creative vibes don't wash away.

Is there an age limit for the Hamilton pop-up workshop?

We love seeing young talent! Generally, our pop-ups are great for ages 8 and up. Younger kids might find the spray cans a bit heavy or tricky to trigger, but they are welcome with adult supervision. It’s a fantastic family activity where kids and parents can collaborate on a piece of street art together.

Local culture

Hamilton (or Kirikiriroa) has grown into a massive hub for creativity. From the incredible murals at the Boon Street Art Festival to the hidden gems tucked away in the CBD alleys, the "Tron" is definitely not boring. Our pop-up events celebrate this local spirit, giving you a chance to contribute to the city's evolving urban culture. We love the laid-back, riverside energy here, and we bring that same relaxed but high-energy atmosphere to every workshop.

Fun Fact: Did you know Hamilton is home to some of the largest street art pieces in New Zealand? Many of the massive murals you see downtown were created by world-class artists during local festivals, proving that the Waikato is a heavy hitter in the NZ art scene! 🎨

Pricing

We believe street art should be accessible to everyone in the Tron. Our pricing is flexible based on your group size and how much paint you want to blast!

Investment: NZ$45 – NZ$95 per person
