The experience

Why choose a graffiti workshop for your Auckland summer camp? It is more than just spray painting; it is about building confidence through unconventional art. Here is why our sessions are a hit across the Super City:

  • Total creative freedom: Unlike rigid art classes, we encourage kids to find their own "tag" and style. 🎤
  • Professional mentors: Learn from real street artists who live and breathe Auckland's urban culture.
  • Confidence boost: Seeing a large-scale piece come together gives youth a massive sense of achievement and "mana". 🏆
  • All-weather options: Rain or shine, we have the gear and the venues to keep the creativity flowing.
  • Safe & Controlled: We teach the difference between "vandalism" and "street art," promoting respect for the community. 💪
  • Zero stress planning: We provide everything from the caps to the cleanup—you just provide the kids!

Step by step

  1. Safety first briefing: We kick things off with a kōrero about how to use the equipment safely, including how to fit masks and gloves properly.
  2. Mastering the nozzles: Campers learn about different 'caps' (nozzles) and how they change the spray pattern from thin lines to fat fills.
  3. Sketching the vision: Before touching the wall, kids grab paper and pencils to map out their tags or characters, learning about letter structure and flow.
  4. Can control practice: We head to the practice wall to learn 'fading', 'outlining', and how to hold the can at the right distance for a clean finish.
  5. Background techniques: Participants start on their main project by layering vibrant colours to create "galaxy" effects or bold splashes of colour.
  6. The big fill-in: This is where the main letters or shapes take form. It is all about steady hands and choosing high-contrast colours to make the art pop.
  7. Detailing and highlights: Our artists show the kids how to add 3D shadows and white "light pops" to give their work depth and a professional look.
  8. The final outline: The most satisfying part! Using a 'skinny cap' to put a sharp black or dark outline around the whole piece to bring it to life.
  9. Photo op and cleanup: We take group photos with the finished masterpieces before ensuring all cans are capped and the site is left tidy.

Local culture

Street art in Auckland

Auckland has a rich and vibrant street art scene, from the colourful walls of Karangahape Road to the hidden gems in Ponsonby and Grey Lynn. Our workshops draw inspiration from the local "Pacific Fusion" style that makes Auckland's urban art unique in the world. We don't just teach art; we teach the history of how street art helped shape the cultural identity of our city. 🎨

Fun Fact: Did you know that Auckland's "Bradley Lane Project" in Glen Innes is one of the longest-running Māori and Pacific street art festivals in the country? We love taking inspiration from these local legends!

Whether we are working on a community mural in West Auckland or a private canvas session in Newmarket, we ensure the "Auckland vibe" is felt in every spray. We encourage our campers to incorporate local symbols—like the silver fern or the Rangitoto silhouette—into their work, blending global street culture with Kiwi pride. ✨
