Is the graffiti workshop safe for secondary school students?

Our graffiti workshops are designed with safety as the primary focus. We provide high-quality masks, gloves, and overalls to ensure no paint gets on clothes or skin. We use low-odour professional spray paint and conduct all sessions in well-ventilated outdoor or indoor spaces. Our artists are fully DBS checked and experienced in managing secondary school groups, providing a secure environment where students can express themselves freely under professional supervision.

Does this encourage students to spray-paint illegally?

Absolutely! We believe in 'art with a purpose.' Our facilitators begin every session by explaining the history of graffiti, the importance of respect in the street art community, and the clear distinction between illegal vandalism and sanctioned street art. We focus on teaching students how to channel their energy into positive, legal creative outlets, often resulting in beautiful permanent murals for the school grounds that promote a sense of pride.

What equipment does the school need to provide?

We handle all the logistics! We provide pro-grade spray cans, caps, protective gear (overalls, gloves, and masks), and the painting surfaces (either large boards or a shared wall). All we need from the school is a suitable outdoor space or a very well-ventilated indoor hall with floor protection. If you aren't sure if your space is suitable, our team can provide a quick assessment to ensure it meets our safety standards.

How long does a typical workshop session last?

Our workshops in Leeds are highly flexible to fit your school timetable. A standard introductory session usually lasts around 2 hours, which perfectly covers a double art period. However, we can also run intensive half-day masterclasses or full-day mural projects where students collaborate on a massive piece of art. We can also run multiple back-to-back sessions for different classes to ensure everyone gets a chance to participate.

What is the maximum group size you can accommodate?

We recommend a maximum of 15-20 students per professional artist to ensure every student gets hands-on guidance and stays safe. However, we have a large team of backup artists across West Yorkshire. This means we can cater to entire year groups (up to 100+ students) by sending multiple artists to run simultaneous stations. This keeps the energy high and ensures no student is left waiting for their turn to spray.

Do students need to have prior artistic skill?

Not at all! Graffiti is a great leveller because the techniques are different from classical drawing. Our artists break down the process into simple steps—from 'tagging' and 'throw-ups' to 'pieces.' Even students who claim they 'can't draw' are often amazed at what they can produce with a spray can. It’s a fantastic way to boost the confidence of students who might struggle with traditional academic subjects or fine art.

Can the workshop be tailored to a specific curriculum theme?

Yes, we love tying our workshops into the UK National Curriculum! Whether you are studying modern art, urban geography, or even social history, we can tailor the session. We can focus on specific themes like identity, environmental issues, or local Leeds history. It's a brilliant way to make theoretical concepts tangible and visual, providing excellent evidence for GCSE or A-Level art portfolios and coursework.

The experience

Graffiti is often the hook that re-engages students who feel disconnected from traditional art methods. It’s fast, it’s big, and it’s undeniably cool. Here’s why Leeds schools choose us:

Boosts engagement: Even the most reluctant learners find it impossible to stay in the sidelines once they see the spray cans! 🔥
Professional mentors: Our artists aren't just teachers; they are active members of the UK street art scene with genuine passion.
Curriculum-aligned: We can link your session to GCSE/A-Level topics or specific social-emotional learning goals. 📖
Zero-risk booking: No upfront payment required—you only pay after the workshop is complete and everyone is happy.
Full safety kit: We provide professional-grade PPE so your students (and their uniforms) stay clean and protected.
Interactive tools: Use our Tag Creator online to prep your designs before we even arrive at your school! 🎤

Step by step

Intro and history: We kick off with an energetic look at street art culture, from NYC origins to the Leeds scene.
Safety briefing: Students are kitted out in protective gear and taught how to handle spray cans safely and responsibly.
Sketching the vision: Before touching the wall, students plan their designs on paper, focusing on letter structure and flow.
First lines: Under guidance, students learn the 'outline' technique, making their first marks on the boards.
Fill colours and fades: We move on to the fun stuff—learning how to blend colours and create those classic graffiti gradients.
The 'cut back': Students learn how to sharpen their edges and make their designs pop using contrasting outline colours.
Highlights and details: Time to add the 'bling'—white highlights and 3D effects that give the artwork depth.
Character work: Groups can collaborate on a central character or background elements to tie the whole mural together.
The big reveal: We finish with a group photo and a debrief on what everyone achieved during the session.

Local culture

Leeds has a deep-rooted connection with street art, from the iconic 'Cornucopia' mural to the modern masterpieces found along the Mabgate area and the Kirkgate Market. Our workshops tap into this local heritage, showing students that they are part of a thriving creative community in West Yorkshire. We often reference local Leeds legends and the city’s industrial aesthetic to inspire our designs.

Fun Fact: Did you know Leeds is home to 'Athena Rising'? At 47 metres tall, it’s one of the tallest murals in the UK! We use examples like this to show students the massive scale and career possibilities within the professional street art world. 🎨

Whether your school is near Headingley, Beeston, or the city centre, we bring the vibe of a professional art studio to your doorstep. We know the local Kirkstall and Holbeck art scenes well, and we’re proud to help the next generation of Leeds creatives find their voice through the spray can. 🏆

Pricing

Our workshop prices are designed to be accessible while ensuring high-quality professional materials. 💰

Standard pricing: £25 - £55 per student.

Please note: The final price depends on the total number of participants, the length of the session, and whether you want students to work on individual canvases or a large-scale permanent mural for the school walls. For the best value, we recommend booking half-day or full-day blocks for multiple classes. ✨
