Step by step

  1. Intro & inspiration: We kick things off with a brief history of graffiti culture, specifically highlighting Philadelphia’s role as a pioneer in the global scene.
  2. Safety first: Every student gets suited up in protective gear and learns the 'Golden Rules' of spray painting to keep everyone safe and clean.
  3. First lines: Under the guidance of our pros, students learn basic can control—dots, lines, and fades—on practice surfaces.
  4. Sketching the vision: Students work together to brainstorm a theme and create a rough sketch of their group masterpiece.
  5. Filling & colors: The fun part! Students start filling in the large shapes of the piece using vibrant colors and learning blending techniques.
  6. Outlining & shines: We teach the trickier skills of adding crisp outlines and 'highlights' to make the artwork pop off the wall.
  7. The tag: Every artist needs a signature. Students learn how to create their own unique tag to sign off on their contribution.
  8. Photo finish: We wrap up with a group photo in front of the completed mural—a perfect memory for the school yearbook!

Local culture

Street art in Philadelphia

Philadelphia isn't just any city—it’s the true cradle of the graffiti movement. Long before NYC took the spotlight, Philly 'writers' like Cornbread and Cool Earl were making history on the streets of North and West Philly. By bringing a workshop to your school, you're connecting your students to a deep local heritage of urban expression.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Philadelphia is home to the world’s largest outdoor art gallery? Thanks to the Mural Arts program, our city features over 4,000 works of public art—many of which grew out of the very graffiti culture your students will explore! 🎨
