Is the spray paint safe for primary school children?

Safety is our number one priority for primary school pupils. We use specialized water based spray paints for younger children which are low odour and much safer for little lungs. Every student is provided with protective gloves and masks, and our expert instructors supervise the groups closely at all times. We ensure the painting area is well ventilated and that children follow all safety protocols while having the time of their lives.

Does this workshop encourage students to vandalise property?

Absolutely not. We believe that graffiti is a powerful tool for positive expression and community building. During the workshop, we teach children the difference between illegal vandalism and street art as a professional creative career. Our instructors emphasize the importance of respecting public property and only painting in designated areas or on authorized canvases. We aim to channel their energy into constructive and legal artistic outlets.

How long does the primary school graffiti workshop last?

A standard workshop for primary schools in Merida typically lasts between 90 minutes and 2 hours. This timeframe is perfect for keeping younger children engaged without them losing focus. We start with a brief introduction and sketching session, followed by the main event where they get to use the spray cans. We can adjust the timing to fit your specific school timetable if needed.

What if some students think they are not good at drawing?

The beauty of graffiti is that it is incredibly inclusive. You do not need to be a naturally gifted artist to create something that looks brilliant. Our instructors guide the children through simple techniques like 'fading', 'outlining', and 'dotting' that produce instant, satisfying results. Even the most hesitant students usually find themselves fully immersed in the process by the end of the session.

Where do the workshops take place in Merida?

We are very flexible when it comes to location. We can bring our mobile setup directly to your school playground or a suitable indoor hall in Merida. Alternatively, we can help arrange a session at a local creative space. All we need is a bit of space and some fresh air. We take care of all the floor and wall protection to ensure your school premises stay tidy.

What materials are included in the workshop package?

We provide everything needed for a successful art day. This includes all the spray cans in a rainbow of colours, protective gear like masks and gloves, and the surfaces to paint on. We often use large canvases or wooden panels that the school can keep afterwards to decorate the hallways. You just need to make sure the students wear old clothes that you do not mind getting a bit of paint on.

What is the ideal age for these workshops?

Our primary school workshops are designed for ages 6 to 12. We adjust our teaching style and the complexity of the techniques based on the specific age group. For the younger Key Stage 1 pupils, we focus more on colour and fun shapes, while for older Key Stage 2 students, we can dive into more technical skills like 3D lettering and character design.

Local culture

Merida is a city where history meets modern creativity. While the city is famous for its stunning colonial architecture and Mayan heritage, there is a growing appreciation for contemporary street art that reflects the local culture. Painting in Merida offers a unique opportunity to blend traditional Yucatecan patterns with modern graffiti techniques. We love seeing how the bright tropical light of the White City inspires the colour palettes our students choose.

Fun fact: Did you know that Merida is often called "La Ciudad Blanca" or The White City? Some say it is because of the white limestone used in its buildings, while others say it is because of the legendary cleanliness of its streets. Our workshops add a spectacular burst of colour to that famous white backdrop! 🎨
