How it works

  1. Intro & inspiration: Our artists kick things off with a brief history of Rotterdam's street art scene and an introduction to different graffiti styles.
  2. Safety first: Everyone gets fitted with their protective gear, including masks and gloves, followed by a briefing on how to handle spray cans responsibly.
  3. First lines: Participants start on a practice wall to get a feel for the pressure of the nozzle and learn how to create thin and thick lines.
  4. Sketching the vision: Using paper or the wall itself, we help the kids sketch out their ideas, focusing on letter structure and 'tags'.
  5. Colour theory: We teach how to choose contrasting colours and how to create smooth gradients and 'fades' with spray paint.
  6. The big project: Working either on individual canvases or a giant collaborative mural, the participants bring their designs to life in full colour.
  7. Sharp outlines: This is where the magic happens! We show them how to add the final 'outline' and 'highlights' to make their art pop.
  8. Photo op & wrap up: We finish with a professional group photo in front of the masterpieces, celebrating everyone's hard work and creative growth.

Frequently asked questions

Do the kids need any previous drawing or painting experience?

Absolutely! No prior artistic experience is needed for our summer camps. Our professional artists are expert mentors who specialise in teaching beginners. We start with the basics of spray can control and safety, moving on to lettering and shading. By the end of the session, every participant will have created a piece they can be proud of. It’s all about discovering your own style and having a blast with new friends.

Is the spray paint safe for children to use?

Safety is our absolute priority. We provide high-quality FFP3 respirators (masks) to filter out fumes, along with protective overalls/ponchos and gloves to keep clothes clean. Our workshops are held in well-ventilated outdoor areas or specially equipped indoor spaces. Furthermore, our instructors are experienced in youth supervision and ensure that the spray cans are used responsibly and safely at all times during the summer camp.

What is the recommended age for the graffiti summer camp?

For our summer camp programmes in Rotterdam, we generally recommend a minimum age of 8 years old. This is mainly because the spray cans require a certain amount of finger strength and coordination to operate effectively. We have different techniques and smaller cans available for younger participants to ensures everyone feels included, but the 8-12 and 13-17 age brackets tend to get the most out of the technical side of the workshop.

What happens if it rains during the scheduled workshop?

The weather in Rotterdam can be unpredictable, but we’ve got it covered. If we are scheduled for an outdoor session and it rains, we can often move to a sheltered 'Hall of Fame' location under a bridge or canopy. Alternatively, we can arrange an indoor setup using water-based, low-odour spray paints that are safe for internal use. We always have a backup plan to ensure the creative fun doesn't stop.

What should participants wear to the workshop?

We suggest wearing comfortable clothing and shoes that you don't mind getting a little bit of paint on. While we provide protective overalls and gloves, graffiti is an active and sometimes messy art form—paint has a way of finding its way onto sleeves or trainers! It's best to leave the brand-new white designer shoes at home for this particular activity and opt for something practical and 'arts-and-crafts' friendly.

How long does a typical graffiti session last?

Our standard graffiti summer camp sessions usually last between 1.5 to 3 hours. This timeframe allows enough room for a thorough safety briefing, a demonstration of techniques, individual practice time, and the final creation of a large-scale group mural or individual canvases. We find this duration keeps the energy high and the focus sharp, ensuring every participant stays engaged from start to finish without getting tired.

How does the payment process work? Do I pay upfront?

We are proud to offer a 'pay after' policy for our summer camp bookings. You don't need to make any upfront payments to secure your date. We believe in the quality of our service and want you to be 100% satisfied with the experience before the final invoice. After the workshop is completed and everyone is buzzing with creative energy, we will handle the admin and payment details. It's hassle-free booking at its best!
