What should the students wear for the workshop?

Surabaya's tropical heat is no joke, so we always recommend wearing old, comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. While we provide high-quality protective overalls and gloves, graffiti is a messy business, and those stray paint mists have a habit of finding their way onto your favourite trainers! Dress for a day of active, messy creativity rather than a fashion show, and you'll have a much better time focusing on your art.

Do the students need any prior art experience?

Absolutely not! Our workshops are designed for all skill levels, from those who can't draw a stick figure to budding young Da Vincis. Our professional artists lead the group through the core techniques step-by-step, ensuring every student feels confident and capable. By the end of the session, even the most hesitant students are usually the ones most excited about their finished masterpieces. It's all about discovery and having a go!

Is the spray paint safe for secondary school students?

Safety is our absolute priority. We provide high-quality respiratory masks, protective gloves, and overalls for every participant. In Surabaya, we prefer to conduct our sessions in well-ventilated outdoor areas or large open-sided halls to ensure plenty of fresh air. Our instructors are trained to oversee the group closely, ensuring that spray cans are used responsibly and that everyone follows the safety protocols while having a blast.

How long does a typical workshop session last?

Our standard workshop for secondary schools in Surabaya typically lasts between 2 and 3 hours. This timeframe allows for a proper introduction, safety briefing, technique practice, and the final creation of the mural or individual canvases. If you have a specific school schedule to stick to, we are very flexible and can adapt the duration to fit into your double periods or a dedicated activity day. Just let us know!

What is the maximum group size you can handle?

We can accommodate groups of almost any size! For a standard secondary school class of 30, we have specific ratios to ensure everyone gets enough attention. For larger year groups, we can bring in multiple artists and set up several 'tagging stations' across the school grounds. Whether it's a small elective art class or a massive end-of-term celebration involving 100+ students, we have the team and the gear to make it happen smoothly.

Does the school need to provide any materials?

We bring everything! Graffitifun provides the spray cans in a rainbow of colours, caps, protective gear, masks, and the painting surfaces (whether that's a temporary wall or individual canvases). All we need from your school in Surabaya is a suitable outdoor or well-ventilated space and access to some water for cleaning up. We handle the setup and the cleanup, taking the stress away from the teaching staff so they can enjoy the day too.

How does the 'no upfront payment' policy work?

We understand that school budgets and plans can change. That's why we don't require any upfront payment to secure your booking. You only pay after the workshop has been successfully completed and everyone is happy with the results. We want to make the process as risk-free and easy as possible for Surabaya's busy educators. This 'pay later' policy is part of our commitment to a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

The experience

Why choose a graffiti workshop for your Surabaya students? It's more than just spraying paint on a wall—it's a gateway to confidence and creative thinking. Here is why schools love working with us:

Total creative freedom: Students who might struggle with traditional media often find their voice with a spray can. It’s a huge confidence booster! 🚀
Team building: Collaborative murals require communication, planning, and teamwork—essential skills for any secondary student.
Expert guidance: Our artists aren't just great at art; they are passionate mentors who know how to engage with teenagers.
Zero stress for teachers: We handle the setup, the gear, and the cleanup. You just provide the space and watch the magic happen! ✨
Reliability: With backup artists and years of experience in cities like Jakarta and Bandung, we never cancel on you.
Instagram-ready: Let's be honest, students love things that look cool on camera. The final results are always photo-worthy! 📸

Step by step

The intro & sketch: We kick things off with a brief history of street art and help students brainstorm their concepts on paper first.
Safety first: Every student gets geared up with masks, gloves, and overalls while we explain the 'golden rules' of handling spray cans.
Can control: Artists demonstrate how to hold the can, control the pressure, and create different line widths – it's harder than it looks but super fun!
First lines: Students move to the wall or canvas to practice basic shapes, getting a feel for the distance and speed required.
Filling & fading: We teach the secrets of smooth fills and those iconic 'fades' and gradients that make graffiti pop.
Outlining: The students refine their work with sharp outlines, bringing their design to life and adding that professional edge.
Highlights & details: The final touches! Adding 'flashes', highlights, and cool details to make the artwork truly stand out.
The big reveal: We stand back as a group to admire the collective masterpiece and snap some epic photos for the school social media.
Cleanup: We pack up all the gear and leave the site tidy, leaving only the incredible artwork and memories behind.

Local culture

Surabaya isn't just Indonesia's industrial powerhouse; it's a city with a fierce creative soul. Known as the Kota Pahlawan (City of Heroes), that same brave spirit is reflected in the local urban art scene. From the vibrant murals hiding in the narrow alleys of the old city to the modern displays near the Suramadu Bridge, street art is part of Surabaya's DNA. Our workshops tap into this local energy, encouraging students to express their own Surabayan identity through their designs.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Surabaya hosts some of the most impressive 'Kampung' (village) transformations in Indonesia? Entire neighbourhoods have been revitalised using vibrant paint and street art, turning once-grey walls into major tourist attractions!

By bringing a graffiti workshop to your school, you're not just teaching art; you're connecting your students to a global movement that has a very special place right here in East Java. 🎨
