Do I need any previous art experience to join the workshop?

Absolutely! Our workshops during the Xi'an Street Art Festival are designed for everyone from total beginners to budding artists. Our professional facilitators walk you through everything from how to hold the spray can to advanced layering techniques. You don't need any prior drawing skills—just a sense of adventure and a willingness to try something new. You'll be amazed at what you can create in just one session!

What materials are included in the festival experience?

We provide everything you need to get creative. This includes high-quality spray paint in a rainbow of colours, protective overalls, gloves, and professional-grade masks to keep you safe and clean. We also provide the 'canvas'—which might be a dedicated wall or a portable board depending on the festival setup. Just show up in comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a tiny bit dusty!

Is the graffiti workshop safe for children and beginners?

Safety is our number one priority at Graffitifun. We provide high-quality respiratory masks and protective gear for all participants. Our workshops take place in well-ventilated outdoor areas, and our artists are trained to supervise the use of spray cans closely. We ensure that kids and adults alike can enjoy the rush of street art without any risks to their health or the environment.

How long does a typical street art session last?

The duration can vary based on the specific festival schedule, but most of our interactive 'taster' sessions last between 1.5 and 2 hours. This gives you plenty of time to learn the basics, practice your 'tag', and contribute to a larger mural or finish your own individual piece. It’s the perfect length to fit into your day of exploring the wider festival attractions.

Do we need to book in advance or can we just show up?

Since our festival workshops in Xi'an are highly popular, we always recommend booking your slot in advance to avoid disappointment. However, if we have space on the day, we love welcoming walk-ins! To ensure your group gets to paint together at a specific time, using our online booking request form is the best way to secure your spot in the creative zone.

What happens if it rains during the outdoor festival?

If the Xi'an weather doesn't play ball, don't worry! We often have covered areas or alternative indoor spaces arranged with the festival organisers. Our 'backup artist' policy also means we are always prepared. If conditions are truly impossible for painting, we’ll work with you to reschedule or find a creative solution so you don't miss out on the fun.

The experience

Why choose a Graffitifun workshop at the Xi'an Street Art Festival? Because we turn art into an adrenaline sport! Here’s why our sessions are the highlight of the festival:

Pro Mentorship: You won't just be doodling; you'll be learning real techniques from artists who live and breathe street culture. 🎨
Unleash Creativity: There are no rules in graffiti! It’s the perfect way to break out of your daily routine and let your imagination run wild. 🚀
All-Inclusive: Don't worry about the mess or the cost of cans. We bring everything to the site so you can focus on the art.
Epic Photos: Your giant, colourful mural makes for the ultimate social media background—show the world your "Xi'an style"! 📸
Fail-Safe Fun: With our backup artist guarantee and "pay later" policy, your experience is 100% stress-free. 💪
Historical Fusion: There is something uniquely "cool" about spraying modern art in one of the world's oldest inhabited cities.

Step by step

Meet your crew: Head to the Graffitifun zone at the festival and meet our professional street artists who’ll be your mentors for the day.
Safety first: Get geared up! We’ll provide you with protective suits, gloves, and professional masks to keep the paint on the wall and off your clothes.
The basics of flow: Learn how to control the pressure of the spray can. Our artists show you how to create thin lines, fat caps, and smooth gradients.
Sketch your vision: Use chalk or light spray to outline your design on the wall. Whether it’s your name or a stylized character, we’ll help you refine the shapes.
Fill and fade: Start bringing your art to life with vibrant colours. This is where you learn the "fill-in" technique and how to blend shades together.
The power of the outline: Add those sharp, defining edges that make graffiti pop. A steady hand and a "force line" can transform your work instantly.
Details and highlights: Add the final 'stardust'—flares, highlights, and 3D shadows that give your piece depth and professional flair.
The big reveal: Step back, snap some photos with your masterpiece, and share your creation with the rest of the festival crowd!

Local culture

Xi'an is a city where the ancient meets the cutting-edge. Known globally for the Terracotta Army and its massive Ming Dynasty city walls, Xi'an is now finding a new voice through modern urban expression. The contrast between the grey stone of the fortifications and the neon pops of a fresh mural is what makes the Xi'an street art scene so electrifying. Our festival workshops are often set against these incredible backdrops, bridging thousands of years of history with the contemporary spirit of the 21st century.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Xi'an was the starting point of the Silk Road? Just as ancient traders brought new ideas and pigments across the world, today's street artists in Xi'an are creating a brand-new visual language on the city's modern outskirts!

We love the energy of the local community here. From the bustling Muslim Quarter to the tech-focused high-tech zones, the hunger for creative outlets is everywhere. Our workshops help fuel this fire, providing a safe and legal space for everyone to experience the thrill of "writing" in a city that has valued calligraphy and art for millennia.
