Do I need prior graffiti experience to join the workshop?

Absolutely not! Our Funchal teacher training is designed for all skill levels. Whether you are a fine arts graduate or haven't touched a paintbrush since primary school, our professional artists will guide you through the basics. We focus on the pedagogy of street art, showing you how to teach the techniques to others, regardless of your personal artistic background. It is all about building your confidence to lead.

Is the spray paint safe to use in an educational setting?

We take safety very seriously. We provide high-quality FFP2 masks, gloves, and protective suits to all participants. Our workshops in Madeira are held in well-ventilated outdoor areas or large indoor halls with proper airflow. We also use low-odour, professional-grade spray cans that are safer for educational environments, ensuring you can replicate this safe setup back at your own school or community centre.

Will I receive a certificate of completion after the training?

Yes! Upon completion of our professional development session in Funchal, every participant receives a Graffitifun certificate. This document outlines the hours completed and the specific skills mastered, such as spray-can handling, stencil making, and group mural management. It is a fantastic addition to your professional portfolio and serves as proof of your new capabilities for school boards or employers.

Can the training be held at my own school or facility?

Usually, we host these sessions at inspiring local spots in Funchal with plenty of wall space. However, if your school or organisation has a suitable outdoor wall and the necessary permissions, we are more than happy to come to you! Travel within the Funchal area is included in our service. This 'on-site' training allows you to learn in the very environment where you will be teaching.

How long does the teacher training session last?

Standard professional development sessions for teachers last between 2 and 3 hours. This allows enough time for the theoretical introduction, safety briefing, hands-on practice, and the creation of a final collaborative piece. If you are looking for a more intensive multi-day masterclass, we can certainly arrange that! We are flexible and can tailor the duration to fit your specific learning goals and schedule.

What materials are included in the price?

We provide everything you need to get creative! This includes a wide variety of premium spray paint colours, caps (nozzles), protective gear, and practice surfaces. We also provide educational handouts and digital resources that you can use later when planning your own lessons. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and some old clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting a bit of paint on!

The experience

Why choose Graffitifun for your professional development in Funchal? We don't just teach you how to paint; we teach you how to inspire. Here is why educators love working with us:

Boost student engagement: Graffiti is a 'hook' that gets even the most reluctant students excited about art. 🔥
Hands-on expertise: Learn from real street artists who live and breathe this culture every day.
Zero stress planning: We provide all the materials and a 'lesson plan' template you can use immediately.
Safety first: Master the technicalities of ventilation and protective gear to keep your classroom safe.
Team building: It is a fantastic way to bond with your colleagues outside the staff room. 🤝
No risk booking: With no upfront payments and backup artists ready to go, your training is guaranteed.

Step by step

Introduction to street culture: We start with a brief, engaging history of graffiti and its evolution into modern street art, giving you the context needed for your lessons.
Safety and equipment mastery: Learn how to set up a safe 'spray zone', including proper mask fitting, glove usage, and surface preparation for students.
The anatomy of a spray can: Our pro artists show you how different 'caps' or nozzles change the line width and pressure, a fundamental skill for any guide.
Basic technique drills: Practice lines, dots, and fades. You will master the 'can control' needed to demonstrate these techniques confidently to your class.
Lettering and stencilling: Move from basic shapes to creating 'throw-ups' and learning how to cut and use stencils for quick, impressive results in short lessons.
Collaborative mural planning: Experience the process of designing a large-scale piece as a team, managing different skill levels within a single project.
The 'Teaching' phase: Spend time discussing pedagogical approaches—how to manage a group of kids with spray cans while keeping the atmosphere fun and productive.
Feedback and cleanup: Learn the best practices for site cleanup and how to provide constructive, encouraging feedback to budding street artists.

Local culture

Funchal is famously known as the 'Garden City', but its urban landscape is becoming just as colourful as its flowers. The Rua de Santa Maria in the Old Town (Zona Velha) is a prime example of how art can transform a community through the 'Art of Open Doors' project. This creative spirit makes Funchal the perfect backdrop for your professional development. Training here means drawing inspiration from the Atlantic breeze and the local 'Madeirense' murals that decorate our winding streets.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Funchal hosts several urban art festivals? Many of the stunning murals you see near the harbour were created by international artists who fell in love with Madeira's unique light and landscape! ✨
