Is graffiti spray painting safe for primary school children?

Absolutely! At Graffitifun, safety is our number one priority. We provide high-quality protective gear, including masks, gloves, and overalls. Our spray paints are water-based or low-solvent where possible, and we always conduct Funchal primary school sessions in well-ventilated outdoor areas. Our professional artists are expert at supervising younger children, ensuring they handle the cans correctly while having a blast in a totally secure environment.

How long does a typical workshop for primary schools last?

For our younger creators in Funchal, we usually recommend a session duration of 1.5 to 2 hours. This timeframe is the 'sweet spot' for primary school kids—it is long enough for them to learn the techniques and complete a masterpiece, but short enough to keep their energy levels high and their focus sharp before they get tired. We can, however, adjust this to fit your school timetable.

What materials do we need to provide for the workshop?

We bring everything! Graffitifun provides all the professional spray cans, caps, protective clothing, and the 'canvas' (which could be a large wooden wall, individual boards, or even a school wall if pre-arranged). You just need to provide the space and enthusiastic students. We even handle the setup and the cleanup afterwards, so the teaching staff don't have to worry about a thing.

What is the maximum group size for a school session?

While we can host workshops for various group sizes, we typically recommend a maximum of 15-20 students per instructor to ensure everyone gets hands-on guidance. For larger primary schools in Madeira, we simply bring more artists! We have a dedicated team of backup artists available, so we can cater to multiple classes in one day without any drop in quality or safety.

Do the children need any prior artistic experience?

Not at all! Our workshops are designed for complete beginners. Our Funchal street artists lead the kids through a step-by-step process, starting with basic lines and shapes before moving on to filling and outlining. We find that primary school children are incredibly natural at this—they have no fear and a lot of imagination, which often leads to the most vibrant results!

What happens if it rains on the day of the workshop?

Funchal's weather is usually lovely, but we always have a plan B. If the weather turns, we can move the workshop under a covered outdoor area or use large plastic sheeting to protect indoor spaces. Alternatively, we can reschedule the session. Because we have multiple artists available, we are very flexible with our booking calendar and will always find a solution to ensure the kids don't miss out.

How do the costs and payments work for schools?

We understand school budgets can be tight, so we offer transparent pricing with no hidden costs. A great benefit of booking with Graffitifun is that we don't require any upfront payment—you only pay after the workshop has been successfully completed. We provide instant cost estimates through our online calculator, or you can request a custom quote tailored specifically to your primary school's needs and group size.

The experience

Why choose a Graffitifun workshop for your Funchal school? It’s more than just painting—it’s about empowerment, motor skills, and creative freedom. Here is why our sessions are a hit with teachers and pupils alike:

Confidence Booster: Street art has no "mistakes," only "happy accidents," which helps kids feel brave in their artistic choices. 💪
Teamwork in Action: Creating a massive mural requires communication, planning, and supporting one another.
Highly Professional: We have a huge team of artists and backups, ensuring your event always goes ahead as planned. 🎤
No Stress for Teachers: We handle the setup, the teaching, and the cleanup. You can just relax and take photos!
Interactive Tools: Use our Tag Creator or Workshop Quiz online to get the kids excited before we even arrive. 🔥
Authentic Experience: Your students learn from real street artists who live and breathe this culture every day.

Step by step

Intro & inspiration: Our professional artist arrives at your Funchal school and kicks things off with a brief history of street art and some cool visual examples.
Safety briefing: We kit everyone out in protective gear (suits, masks, and gloves) and explain the "golden rules" of using spray cans safely.
First lines: The kids get their first can and learn how to control pressure to create thin lines, thick dots, and smooth movements on the practice wall.
Sketching the design: Working together, the group sketches out a large-scale design, often themed around school values or local Madeiran nature.
The big fill: This is the fun part! The students use vibrant colours to fill in the shapes, learning how to blend shades and create "fades".
Outlining & shines: We show the kids how to make their art "pop" by adding sharp black outlines and white highlights for a 3D effect.
Characters & tags: Students get to add their own personal flair, including their "street names" or small icons that represent their personality.
The big reveal: We step back, remove the protective tape, and admire the massive collaborative mural the primary school team has created together.
Cleanup: Our team packs everything up, leaving your school grounds as tidy as we found them—except for the amazing new artwork!

Local culture

Funchal is a city that already breathes art—just look at the famous painted doors of the Rua de Santa Maria! Our workshops take that local Madeiran spirit and give it a modern, urban twist. We love incorporating local elements into our designs, from the bright colours of the Bird of Paradise flower to the blue shades of the Atlantic Ocean. 🎨

Fun Fact: Did you know that Funchal’s "Art of Open Doors" project turned an old part of the city into a permanent open-air museum? It’s the perfect inspiration for your students to become the next generation of Madeiran artists!

By bringing our workshop to your primary school, we connect your students with the growing street art culture of Portugal, bridging the gap between traditional Madeira and modern creative expression. ✨
