Is the graffiti workshop safe for teenagers and children?

Our youth graffiti workshops in Utrecht are designed with safety as the top priority. We use low-pressure spray cans that are easier for younger hands to control and provide high-quality FFP3 respirators to ensure no one breathes in fumes. Our professional artists supervise every second of the session, teaching proper nozzle technique and spatial awareness. We also provide protective overalls and gloves to keep clothes clean while the creativity flows!

Do the participants need any prior art experience?

Not at all! Our workshops are specifically designed for beginners. We start with the absolute basics—how to hold a can, how to control the pressure, and how to draw a simple line. Our Utrecht artists are experts at breaking down complex street art techniques into easy-to-follow steps. By the end of the session, even those who thought they couldn't draw a stick figure will have created a vibrant piece of art.

What kind of surfaces do the youth paint on?

Depending on the project's goals, we can work on several surfaces. Typically, we use large wooden panels or professional-grade canvases that the participants can take home or display at their youth centre. In some cases, we can arrange for 'mural days' where we paint on a permanent wall, though this requires specific permissions. We also offer 'cellograffiti' (plastic wrap between pillars) for a temporary, eco-friendly street art experience.

Can you host the workshop at our youth centre in Utrecht?

We are very flexible! We have several dedicated legal graffiti spots in Utrecht where we can host the group. However, if you have a suitable outdoor space at your youth club or school (with enough ventilation), we can bring the entire mobile studio to you. We handle all the prep work, including covering the ground and surrounding areas to ensure no accidental paint ends up where it shouldn't be.

What should the participants wear to the workshop?

Wear clothes you don't mind getting a little messy! While we provide professional protective overalls and gloves, graffiti paint is permanent, and a little 'stray mist' can sometimes find its way onto shoes or sleeves. We recommend old trainers and comfortable outdoor clothing. If it's a sunny day in Utrecht, don't forget the sunscreen, as most of our creative sessions take place in the fresh air.

How long does a typical youth graffiti session last?

A standard youth project workshop usually lasts between 1.5 and 3 hours. This timeframe allows us to cover the history of street art, practice basic techniques, sketch out a design, and complete a full-scale piece. We find this is the 'sweet spot' for keeping energy levels high and focus sharp. If you're looking for a full-day programme or a multi-day project, we can easily customise the duration.

How do we book a workshop and what are the payment terms?

Booking is easy and risk-free! You can start by using our online Cost Calculator to get an instant estimate. Once you're ready, reach out via our contact form to check availability for your preferred date in Utrecht. We don't require upfront payments—you pay after the workshop is completed. Plus, we have backup artists available, so you never have to worry about a last-minute cancellation ruining your event.

The experience

Why choose a graffiti workshop for your next youth project in Utrecht? It’s more than just painting walls—it’s about empowerment! ✨

Boosts Confidence: Watching a blank space transform into a vibrant artwork gives young people a massive sense of achievement.
Teamwork in Action: Our large-scale murals require communication, planning, and collaboration.
Stress Relief: There is something incredibly therapeutic about the 'hiss' of a spray can and the flow of the paint.
Authentic Culture: We don't just teach art; we share the history and values of the global street art movement.
Zero Pressure: No grades, no judgements—just pure creative experimentation in a safe environment.
Expert Mentors: Our artists are active in the scene and know how to connect with youth on their level. 🎤

Step by step

Intro & inspiration: We start with a quick, high-energy talk about the history of graffiti and the difference between street art and vandalism.
Safety briefing: Everyone gets geared up with masks, gloves, and overalls while we explain how to use the equipment safely.
Mastering the nozzles: Participants learn about different 'caps' (nozzles) and practice basic lines, dots, and fades on a practice wall.
Sketching the vision: Using paper and markers, the youth group brainstorms a theme and sketches their individual or collective designs.
Setting the piece: Our artists help the group 'sketch' the outlines onto the final surface using light paint colours.
The fill-in: This is where the magic happens! Participants use their chosen colours to fill in their designs, learning about colour theory and blending.
Outlining & highlights: We teach the trick to making art 'pop' by adding sharp outlines and white highlights for a 3D effect.
The final reveal: The group steps back to admire their hard work, followed by a professional photoshoot with their masterpiece.
Clean up: We pack up all the materials, leaving the site exactly as we found it (except for the awesome new art!).

Local culture

Utrecht isn't just about beautiful canals and the Dom Tower; it’s a city with a deep-rooted love for underground culture. From the famous legal graffiti zone at the Griftpark to the hidden murals in the Tweede Daalsedijk, the city breathes street art. Our workshops tap into this local 'Uteregse' spirit, encouraging participants to contribute to the city's evolving visual story.

Fun Fact: Did you know Utrecht is home to some of the tallest street art murals in the country? Some "De Strakke Hand" paintings elsewhere in the city are so large they can be seen from blocks away—talk about big goals for our young artists! 🇳🇱
