I have never used a spray can; is this workshop suitable for me?

Absolutely! Our street art festival experiences in Dortmund are designed for everyone, from complete beginners to those who have held a spray can before. Our professional artists guide you through every step, starting with basic safety and nozzle control. You will be amazed at how quickly you can create a vibrant piece of art with just a few expert tips and some creative freedom. Everyone leaves with something they are proud of!

What equipment is provided during the festival workshop?

We provide everything you need to dive into the world of graffiti! This includes high-quality spray paint in a huge range of colours, professional-grade nozzles (caps), protective overalls, gloves, and high-quality respiratory masks for your safety. We also provide the canvases or designated wall space. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and some clothes you don't mind getting a little dusty!

How do you ensure safety during a busy street art festival?

Safety is our absolute priority. We use low-pressure spray cans that are easier to control and provide high-quality FFP2 or FFP3 respiratory masks to ensure nobody breathes in paint fumes. We also supply protective suits and gloves. Our artists are trained to manage large groups in festival environments, ensuring a safe distance between painters and maintaining a clean, professional workspace throughout the entire event.

What happens if it rains during the outdoor festival?

Dortmund weather can be unpredictable, but we are always prepared! For festival setups, we usually work with pop-up tents or indoor venues if available. If the weather is truly extreme, our backup artist system ensures we can reschedule or adapt the format to keep everyone dry and happy. We always check the forecast in advance and coordinate with festival organisers to ensure the creative fun never stops.

How long does a typical street art festival session last?

The duration is flexible to suit the festival's pace! A standard intensive workshop session usually lasts between 1.5 to 3 hours. However, for large-scale festivals in Dortmund, we often run "walk-in" sessions where people can contribute to a massive communal mural over several hours. We tailor the timing to your specific event needs to ensure maximum participation and engagement for all visitors.

Step by step

Intro & inspiration: We start with a high-energy introduction to the history of Dortmund street art and a safety briefing to get everyone ready.
Mastering the nozzles: You will learn about different "caps" and how they change the spray width, practicing your first lines on a practice surface.
Sketching the vision: Our artists help you sketch your design, focusing on letter structure, 3D effects, and composition.
First layers: Time to fill! You will apply the base colours of your graffiti, learning how to achieve smooth, even coverage without drips.
Outlining & shines: This is where the magic happens. You’ll add sharp outlines and "highlights" to make your artwork pop off the surface.
Adding the details: Learn pro techniques like "fading" and "dusting" to add depth and texture to your festival masterpiece.
The grand reveal: We step back as a group to admire the collective mural or individual canvases created during the event.
Photo session: Capture the moment with professional photos of you and your crew in front of your finished street art.

Local culture

Dortmund is a city that wears its heart on its walls. From the iconic murals in the Unionviertel to the hidden gems around the Dortmund U-Tower, street art is woven into the city's DNA. This isn't just about paint; it's about the "Ruhrpott" spirit—authentic, gritty, and incredibly creative. Our workshops tap into this local heritage, drawing inspiration from the industrial backdrop of the Westfalenhallen and the green expanses of Westfalenpark. 🏗️

Fun Fact: Did you know that Dortmund is home to some of the tallest graffiti murals in North Rhine-Westphalia? The city actively supports urban art through various legal "halls of fame" where artists from across Europe come to leave their mark!
